Roundabout improvements aimed at cutting congestion

ROADWORKS are to begin on Monday at one of Sheffield's major roundabouts, on the city's inner ring road.

Junction improvements at the Moore Street roundabout are part of a wider scheme which aims to reduce journey times on both the roundabout itself and its approach roads.

Works taking place over the next seven weeks will involve widening the road on Charter Row so that three full lanes are created.

A bus lane near the Wickes store will be removed and lane markings will change, meaning that drivers heading out towards Ecclesall Road will no longer be able to use the inside lane on the approach to the roundabout.

Coun Ian Auckland, cabinet member for business, transport and skills at Sheffield Council, said: "Small improvements to capacity at the junction of the roundabout should contribute to bigger improvements for motorists in the future.

"By widening the lanes vehicles will be able to make better use of the roundabout, helping getting through Moore Street roundabout faster.

"We've made sure that the construction work takes place outside of peak hours to minimise any disruption. The work should be finished in seven weeks."

The roadworks will involve lane closures between 9.30am and 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, to avoid disruption to motorists at peak times.

A Sheffield Council spokesman added: "The existing roundabout has limited capacity because approach lanes on Charter Row are too narrow. Lane markings also do not reflect current traffic flows and turning movements."
