Roundabout removal to start as £20m road plan drives on

higHWAYS engineers will start work today to convert two roundabouts into conventional junctions with traffic lights as part of a £20m scheme to improve access to a town centre.

The Potteric Carr and Lady Bank roundabouts will both be removed as part of the scheme to make the A6182 White Rose Way into a dual carriageway between the M18 and central Doncaster.

Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies acknowledged that the work would cause major inconvenience for commuters and residents in the short term, but said the problems faced would be worth it.

He added: “We need motorists to bear with us while we carry out this important work. We are doing all we can to reduce the impact on road users and the benefits once the scheme is complete are immeasurable.

“These improvements on one of our key gateways are essential for the development of the town and our economy.

“As well as dramatically reducing congestion and improving journey times into Doncaster they are critical for unlocking development opportunities and driving new investment into the borough.”

White Rose Way, which is currently two lanes on the inbound side and one lane on the outbound, links to junction 3 of the M18 has become notorious as one of the town’s worst traffic bottlenecks.

A new bridge has been built over the East Coast main line to allow for the dualling of the road and the council said all parts of the project were currently on schedule.

Engineers said the new junctions would utilise the “latest intelligent technology that changes the traffic light sequences to help keep traffic flowing”.

The project has been funded with £10m from the European Union’s regional development fund and £9.7m from the Department of Transport.

Council transport bosses have led the project and said it will help promote growth and businesses around the town’s Lakeside area and other parts of town encouraging further investment in the borough.

All road users are asked to pay attention to the signs on the approaches and along the route and any signposted diversions.

It is expected that the project will finally be complete and open to traffic by July 2013.
