Route of the Olympic Torch in Yorkshire mapped out

THE full details of the Olympic Flame’s historic journey through Yorkshire can be revealed today along with the 600 inspirational torch bearers who will carry the flame through the region.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, LOCOG, has released street maps of the entire 70-day national torch relay, and promised the flame will travel within ten miles of 95 per cent of the population.

In Yorkshire celebrations are planned for each of the six full days the flame visits the region – the longest stay of any outside of London itself.

Major music events are planned at York Racecourse, Barker’s Pool in Sheffield, West Park in Hull and the 50,000 capacity Temple Newsam Park in Leeds.

Lord Coe, LOCOG chairman, said: “Today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life. The flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets.

“Now the people know the route the Olympic flame will be carried along and the torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Yorkshire’s moment to shine.”

The torch will travel through 78 towns and villages in the region, taking in all 22 local authority areas and travelling passed famous landmarks such as Fountains Abbey, near Ripon, Scarborough seafront and the Humber Bridge.
