Royal accolade for town's new environmentally-sound almshouses

NEW almshouses in Beverley have been given the Royal seal of approval.

Prince Charles presented the Almshouse Association Patron's Award to Beverley Consolidated Charity for its development of bungalows and apartments at Keldgate Bar, in the town.

The four apartments and five bungalows have been built in the heart of the historic market town using traditional brick, stone and pantiles. Solar panels heat the water and the buildings are insulated above current building regulation standards.

The charity's surveyor Richard Watts said: "It's low-key and very sympathetic to its surroundings.

"He is a green Prince and I guess the solar panels were a bonus when the Patron's Award Committee came up to visit, as well as the good insulation and the overall design."

Vice-chairman of the charity Jo Dunn, along with fellow trustee Sue Smith and director of the scheme developers Risby Homes Mark Barrett travelled to Trinity Hospital, Greenwich, to receive the award from Prince Charles.

The charity now has a waiting list of more than 100. It's in the process of building seven more almshouses to be completed in April. To apply people have to be over 60 and to have lived in the town for more than 10 years.
