Royal backing for wool industry

Prince Charles called on consumers to think twice about buying synthetics instead of wool.

He was speaking in Cambridge at the launch of The Wool Project – a promotional drive which grew out of his concern.

He called wool producers, textile makers and fire chiefs, to a meeting at Clarence House last year, to ask what could be done, and The Wool Project is the answer, backed interested parties in Australia and New Zealand as well as the UK.

The Prince said farmers were leaving wool production because the price they got for the fleece was below the costs of shearing it.

He listed reasons why wool was a better product than synthetics.
