Rubber bullets at student protest

Rubber bullets will be available to police chiefs as thousands of officers are deployed for a fresh round of student fees protests.

About 10,000 demonstrators are expected in London on Wednesday to voice their anger over tuition fees and cuts.

Scotland Yard Commander Simon Pountain said that 4,000 officers will be on duty thanks to mutual aid provided by other forces. Baton rounds will be made available for “extreme” measures amid fears scenes will be hijacked by anarchists.

A previous demonstration resulted in widespread problems in the capital last year. Mr Pountain added: “We hope this will be a peaceful event.”
