Rubbish dumped to highlight litter problem

Piles of rubbish are set to be dumped outside Cusworth Hall by Doncaster Council workers today in a bid to highlight the problem of littering in the town.

The main problem, a council spokesman said, is caused by motorists throwing litter out of car windows. Over the last week, litter has been collected from roads across Doncaster and it is set to be dumped in front of the Grade One-listed country house at 3pm this afternoon.

Coun Cynthia Ransome, cabinet member for neighbourhoods at Doncaster Council, said: "Cusworth Hall and Country Park is a really beautiful place and one of the jewels in Doncaster's crown.

"We are bringing all of this rubbish here to highlight how it can really spoil the appearance of the borough."

Those caught dropping litter can be handed a 75 fixed penalty charge, which could potentially rise to a fine of 2,500 if the case goes to court. Coun Ransome added: "Whether you are driving through the busy town centre, or a country lane where you think that no one can see, it is completely unacceptable to throw litter out of your car window.

"We are committed to tackling all forms of litter in Doncaster and are determined that people will take responsibility for their actions."
