Last night a spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “There is a strong indication that the offender may have been a Featherstone Rovers supporter, and may have got onto a coach for supporters returning home.”

The incident happened at about 8.15pm on Sunday following Halifax’s victory at the Halliwell Jones stadium, in Warrington.

The police spokesman added: “He is currently being treated at Walton Hospital having undergone emergency surgery. He remains in a critical condition.”

Police say the car park was very busy at the time with fans returning to their coaches and anyone with information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000.
