Rugby stars sign up to campaign to help safeguard the environment

RUGBY players from Castleford Tigers have pledged their support for a conservation charity's campaign to safeguard the environment.

They have signed the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds' Letter to the Future, which aims to safeguard the environment for future generations.

The Castleford Tigers team, including Australian prop Mitchell Sargent and loose forward Brett Ferres, added their names in support of the campaign during a visit to the charity's Fairburn Ings nature reserve, which is three miles from Castleford.

Already signed by almost 250,000 people, the Letter to the Future campaign urges politicians to consider the health of the planet when they are making decisions about where to invest money and where to make cuts.

It aims to get the Government to spend more wisely, to do more to protect wildlife and the environment. One of the objectives of the campaign is to save tropical rain forests, which support a huge range of species including the endangered Sumatran tiger in Indonesia.

The Letter to the Future also asks the Government to takes steps to "stop climate change chaos, end extinctions, safeguard sealife, and create a countryside fit for wildlife", said a charity spokesperson.

This includes ensuring nature reserves like RSPB Fairburn Ings are given adequate funding.
