Rumours of new Stone Roses album and tour

A series of posters bearing nothing other than the band’s iconic lemon have been posted around the band’s home city of Manchester, particularly in record stores.

The band reformed in 2011 for a series of triumphant concerts and worldwide tour but no new material has surfaced and the band has not performed together since 2013.

The new posters have given rise to a flood of speculation on the internet about the band’s future, with rumours of a headline performance at next year’s Glastonbury Festival as well as a stadium tour doing the rounds.

There was a flood of tweets suggesting the band could be set to make an announcement this evening.

The Stone Roses formed in Manchester in the early-80s and endured a slow rise to the top, becoming arguably the country’s biggest band by the end of the decade and receiving worldwide acclaim for their eponymous debut album.

Singles like Fools Gold and One Love were massive hits but the band ran into legal difficulties and did not release the follow-up until 1994’s The Second Coming, which received mixed reviews. The departure of drummer Alan “Reni” Wren followed by principal songwriter and guitarist John Squire eventually led to the band’s disintegration following a disastrous headline performance at the 1996 Reading Festival.

Singer Ian Brown went on to enjoy a successful solo career while bassist Gary “Mani” Mountfield joined Primal Scream.

When the band reformed in 2011 they did promise new material, claiming to have signed a new record contract.
