Runners get wet and wild on Skipton leg of obstacle event

The event at Broughton Hall near Skipton is one of the latest in a worldwide series of endurance events where participants attempt ten to 12-mile long military-style obstacle courses.

Organisers say Tough Mudder Yorkshire, which took place on Saturday and Sunday, saw entrants “run over rough rolling fields, head though daring woodland and step over streams, bogs, and of course lots of mud”.

After slogging through heavy mud and clay in one of the 60 similar events held worldwide, they finished by shooting down a water slide.

Among the competitors were Jack Brannan of Cleckheaton and Alan Hinton of Knaresborough.

Mr Hinton, a 32-year-old maths teacher, described on the Justgiving website how he was raising money for The Christie Hospital in Manchester, where he was given “18 months of chemotherapy, one month of radiotherapy and a stem cell transplant” after being diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system.

He said after the race: “It was very enjoyable, really well organised. The camaraderie was fantastic. It was a real team event.”
