Rural road scheme to be unveiled to residents

RESIDENTS living in rural communities on the edge of Sheffield have been encouraged to attend an event which will outline plans to “transform” their roads.

Sheffield Council and its PFI contractor Amey recently unveiled a £2bn plan which the company says will help Sheffield shed its image as the country’s “pothole city”.

The 25-year Streets Ahead contract involves a five-year “core investment period” in which every road in Sheffield will be replaced, followed by a 20-year maintenance scheme.

Earlier this month highways bosses revealed that work would begin in the Shiregreen and Ewden areas in September, and a roadshow has already taken place in Shiregreen.

A similar “meet the public” event in Ewden will be held at Bolsterstone village hall, between 5pm and 8pm on Wednesday, and will allow locals to examine the plans in detail.

Coun Jack Scott, Sheffield Council’s roads spokesman said: “We are encouraging all residents and businesses in the Ewden area to come to this roadshow to find out more about how the Streets Ahead works will affect them.

“The roadshow is also an opportunity for the Streets Ahead team to listen directly to the community and learn more about the main issues that are concerning them about the roads and streetscene in their area.”

Graeme Symonds, from Amey, said: “Working on the city’s roads and streetscene and making the improvements we have planned, will inevitability mean a level of disruption for all commuters and residents in that area.

“We have planned our works to try and minimise this disruption but we will be working with the local community to ensure that they are kept fully informed.”

It is planned that it will take between 15 to 20 weeks to carry out all the works across the whole of the Ewden area, which is north west of the city centre, around the Broomhead reservoir.
