The A6120 outer ring road was snarled by stop-start traffic from Rodley at the A657 Rodley Lane junction.

Travel time was said to be 10 minutes for the stretch, but drivers were reporting much longer delays.

There was also congestion on the A65 New Road Side junction and on A65 Leeds Road to the Layton Lane junction, causing tailbacks towards Rawdon.

A new traffic light system controlling access to the ring road was being blamed for the chaos.

Meanwhile, drivers coming from the opposite direction faced queuing traffic on the M621 westbound between the M1 at Belle Isle and the Hunslet distributor road.

One commuter said: “This is an absolute joke.”

Today’s delays come two days after major morning delays on the M621 and a fortnight after a series of minor accidents caused gridlock in Leeds for afternoon commuters.
