Safe driving course for the over-60s

MOTORISTS aged 60 and over are to be offered a free driving course after road safety chiefs said statistics showed they were more likely to be involved in accidents.

South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership will host the event at the Lifewise Centre in Rotherham on December 10 in conjunction with the locally-based Safety 1st Driving Academy.

Staff said they aimed to deliver an “entertaining and informative presentation at the event as well as offering on the road driving sessions”.

PC Mick Hedges of South Yorkshire Police, who has developed the course, said: “Older drivers have amassed a wealth of experience over their driving career.

“The course aims to bring their knowledge up to date and help them to drive safer for longer, to maintain their mobility and independence.”

Andy Warburton, from Safety 1st Driving Academy, added: “We’re really excited to be involved with this event and to have an opportunity to help our more senior citizens to continue to be safe and considerate drivers.

“We are able to offer this free of charge through our work with the Safer Roads Partnership, so it won’t cost drivers a penny.”
