Safety drive to target young car customisers

YOUNG drivers who soup up and customise their cars are being targeted in a campaign to ensure their tinkering does not steer them onto the wrong side of the law.

The craze for novice motorists to put their own stamp on their vehicles has been underlined by the continued success of shows such as MTV's Pimp My Ride.

But Safer Ryedale Road Safety Partnership is concerned the fashion could contribute to the tragic loss of young life.

Aside from the dangers they might expose themselves to by messing around under the bonnet, even taping name stickers and other banners over the windscreen is illegal because it restricts visibility.

The partnership plans to run several Young Driver initiatives across Ryedale District, aimed at all young drivers, their passengers, and those getting ready to take their tests.

A spokesman said: "The aim is to raise awareness of responsible driving and the dangers posed to the younger and more inexperienced drivers, along with providing information to passengers travelling in vehicles driven by young or inexperienced drivers.

"The evenings will also cover street legal cars, where friendly advice will be given by local police officers on alterations to and the customisation of cars.

"There will be a simulated car crash showing Firefighters in action cutting up a car to release a trapped driver and a hard hitting presentation covering the tragic loss of a young life."

The events will be attended by North Yorkshire Fire Service, North Yorkshire Police and 95 Alive road safety officers. The dates are Pickering Fire Station on Wednesday; Malton Fire Station on Tuesday July 20; Helmsley Fire Station on August 3, and Kirkbymoorside Fire Station on August 9.

All the events will start at 6.30pm and refreshments will be provided. Parents are also welcome to attend.

"Please take this opportunity to come to one of the events and to chat to the Road Safety Group members," the spokesman added.
