Safety event for young motorcyclists

POLICE in South Yorkshire have set up a new road safety scheme for young motorcyclists, which will be launched in Doncaster on Monday.

Although motorbikes make up just one per cent of total road traffic in the UK, motorcyclists account for 19 per cent of all deaths on the roads.

More than 1,500 people are expected to attend the first "Riding for Life" event, which will begin at 9am at Doncaster College's Hub building.

Exhibitors will include the police motorcycle group, South Yorkshire Air Ambulance, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Bernie Macey's and A1 motorcycle training, J and S motorcycles, Moto Grafix motorcycles and Team Roberts motorcycles.

Emma Metcalfe, motorcycle education officer for South Yorkshire, said: "I'm a biker myself and wish that something like this had been available to me when I was first learning to ride. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who rides, or is thinking about learning to ride a motorbike".
