Safety fears prompt revision for road scheme

A MAJOR road improvement scheme on the main route into York city centre is being revised over safety concerns.

The project has been drawn up to reduce congestion and pollution along Fulford Road, which has increasingly become a notorious bottleneck for traffic. The work has seen junctions improved, new traffic signals introduced and cycle and bus lanes created.

However, concerns have been raised about a section between Hospital Fields Road and Fulford Cross, which has seen a bus lane introduced and was the scene of a serious road crash in May which left a cyclist critically injured.

North Yorkshire Police and Army officials have joined residents in voicing fears that the new bus lane is creating confusion for motorists. York Council officers have drawn up a series of options which include removing the bus lane and replacing it with cycle lanes at a cost of up to 15,000.

The council's executive member for city strategy, Steve Galloway, will consider the proposals on Tuesday next week.
