Safety improvements planned for town centre accident blackspot

North Lincolnshire Council wants to improve safety for pedestrians and road users in Frodingham Road, Scunthorpe, where there have been 41 accidents resulting in injury and one fatality in the last five years.

Harold Kilmore, 86, of Ferry Road, Scunthorpe, died in hospital in November 2011, 11 days after his car was in collision with a police van.

A total of 18 of those hurt were pedestrians, including a boy of 11 who was hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing near Britannia Corner in March that year.

The plans include the creation of three raised ”table-top” crossings between Fox Street and Holy Souls Parish Roman Catholic Church, a new zebra crossing near the junction with Berkeley Street, an extension of the 20mph zone, and the installation of a mini-roundabout at the Ferry Road junction.

Coun Nigel Sherwood, cabinet member for highways and neighbourhoods, said: “We were approached by local residents around the Frodingham Road area regarding road safety and asked if the council would improve the pedestrian crossing points along the road.

“After listening to their concerns we produced a safety scheme plan for Frodingham Road. We are currently consulting with local residents and businesses on the proposals to get their views.

“It’s important that local people have their say to ensure that the scheme will make a difference. If you would like to share your views, don’t hesitate to contact us.”

The improvements would not need planning permission and have yet to be costed.

Temporary traffic lights would be used and there would be some overnight road closures while the work was carried out.
