Safety railings at beach

HEALTH and safety fears have prompted council chiefs to install railings on the promenade of one of Yorkshire’s most popular resorts.

Scarborough Borough Council has started work this week to erect the temporary railings on a section of the promenade in front of chalets above Whitby’s West Cliff beach. The scheme is being carried out for the main tourism season after tidal action and weather conditions reduced the level of sand on the beach.

The height of the drop between the promenade and the beach has increased and left rocks and the bottom of the sea wall exposed. The temporary railings are due to be replaced with permanent barriers in the autumn.
