Barnsley Council is reminding shoppers to ensure children are strapped into the child seat after two young girls riding in a supermarket trolley were thrown to the ground after it flipped over.

The incident happened at Tesco on Wombwell Lane, Barnsley, and shop managers reported the accident to the council as they are required to by law.

Barnsley Council said it was now supporting calls by Tesco to remind parents not to let children sit in the basket with groceries.

Council officers said it is the responsibility of parents and carers to use shopping trolleys correctly and not allow youngsters to misbehave. They also said they would support any staff who asked parents to place their children into trolleys properly.

Coun Roy Miller, said: "This incident could easily have been prevented. Supermarket trolleys are designed with child safety in mind. If the children sit in the seats correctly there should be no problem with stability.

“There is no suggestion the supermarket did anything wrong. Indeed, it is with concern for the safety of the child when supermarket staff politely remind people of the importance of using the designated child seat."
