Sainsbury's to consult over plans for store

SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury's is to consult Sheffield residents on plans to open a new 50,000 sq ft store on land on the Claywheels Lane estate in Wadsley Bridge.

Plans for the superstore on land now owned by Fletchers Group of Bakeries will be on display at the Niagara Sports and Social Club on Friday, July 16 from noon until 7pm and also on Saturday, July 17 from 10am until 2pm.

Members of the Sainsbury's and Fletchers project team will be on hand to answer questions and give out leaflets detailing the proposals.

Jo Try, regional development executive for Sainsbury's, said: "We believe we have found the right site to develop Sainsbury's first store in north Sheffield.

"Since the plan to develop a new store was first announced, Sainsbury's has received encouraging feedback from residents in the local area, many of whom are keen on a Sainsbury's presence in the north of the city.

"We hope to bring a store that offers the full Sainsbury's goods range, creating up to 400 new Sainsbury's jobs in the process.

"But our first priority is to consult the local community and listen to what local people have to say about our preliminary plans."

Bosses at Fletchers Group of Bakeries say that the investment from Sainsbury's is vital to the future of their operation.

Managing director Stephen Holding said: "The funds generated from the sale of land to Sainsbury's is vital to Fletchers' future Sheffield investment plans, which include the modernisation of part of the factory within the Claywheels Lane site.

"This will create a more sustainable and efficient factory at Claywheels Lane that will ensure production of consistently high-quality products competitively for major retailer and food service partners.

"With Sainsbury's investment, Fletchers can and will keep all of its 350 staff in employment."

The proposed site is used for parking Fletchers employees' cars, since a fire in 2006 burnt down the buildings on it.
