Sainsbury’s plans spark objections

Traders look set to object to plans for a new Sainsbury’s store in Beverley as part of a £55m retail park.

Litton Properties wants to build a 50,000 sq ft supermarket on a 13-acre site on Grovehill Industrial Estate in Beverley and 12 smaller units and additional parking on 12 acres of adjoining land owned by East Riding Council.

It comes three years after rival developer Castlemore Securities, who had planned to develop the council land as a retail park, withdrew their plans when they were called in by the Secretary of State.

Chairman of Beverley & District Chamber of Trade, Ben Gardiner, said: “We objected last time round and see nothing that would change our opinion. “We are not against development, but we don’t think retail is the best option.

“We’d love to see call centres, offices and start ups for new business.”

A number of developers have taken an interest in the council-owned site, which will go on sale in the New Year. A council spokesman said: “The site will be marketed in the New Year by the council and we will have to consider all the proposals that come forward. The council has not agreed any specific proposal at this stage.”
