Now restored and fully-working, it is York's last surviving windmill and the oldest five-sailed mill in the country. It produces traditional stone-ground flour and houses a small museum.
The spectacular view of the windmill and the sought-after location, which is next to West Bank Park and is a 1.1 mile walk to York train station, helped sell the house to Finlay Dawson
He bought it from new eight years ago and says: “I loved the design of the house and the location. It's very peaceful and idyllic. You're away from busy city centre yet it's only a short walk in. I travel to London a lot and I can get the 6.30am train and be in London before 9am.”
He adds: “When I work from home, I have a view of the windmill and seeing its sails turning is a wonderful sight.”
Finlay is selling to buy a country house, near Richmond, but says: “I have loved living here.”
Designed by architect Nick Midgley for developer Michael Hammill, the house has a large, open-plan living space with sitting, dining and kitchen areas. Glazed doors lead to a south-facing balcony overlooking West Bank Park.
A first-floor mezzanine level contains a lounge and office area. There are four good sized bedrooms on the lower floor, along with two bathrooms. The house is accessed through gates from Windmill Rise where there is a garage and parking area. Entry to the property is via a walkway over the garden, which has a seating area in the middle of the lawn and is lit by spot lighting below the walkway. There is a second garden on the other side of the property, creating a delightful view from the downstairs bedrooms.
Tanya Coffey of Savills says: “This is a highly original home in the shadow of one of York's great landmarks.”
