Scene and herd

IT'S a picture perfect scene that may well have captured the imaginations of passers-by since medieval times. Records dating back hundreds of years show the existence of a deer park at Harewood, near Leeds.

The estate has two herds, one red and one fallow, but the recent find of a red deer antler in a pond proved deer were also living in the area 4,000 years ago. It was carbon dated to 1876 BC. The deer would have shared the land with bears, wild boar and wolves.
