Scheme set to restore empty homes

COUNCIl bosses in Doncaster have launched a new scheme to try to cut down on the number of privately-owned empty homes in the town.

The authority has announced the launch of a scheme which aims to match the owners of empty properties with those keen to buy an empty house.

The scheme has been developed by Doncaster Council’s empty homes team.

It is free to join the scheme and the properties will be seen by people specifically wanting to buy an empty home.

There are currently thought to be 4,631 empty homes in Doncaster, which may have been left empty as a result of a lack of funds to renovate them, or else due to the death of the owner or a repossession.

Coun Ray Mullis, Doncaster Council’s cabinet member for housing, praised the scheme and said: “The buyers have to be interested in purchasing an empty property for either letting or affordable resale to first time buyers, while sellers have to be interested in providing their empty property for agreed sale.

“It is a way of tackling empty properties in the borough and turning them into homes.”
