School choir to sing for Pope

When an inner-city primary launched a bid to become a Cathedral Choir School earlier this year it hoped to give children the chance to sing on the big stage.

But Holy Rosary and St Anne's Catholic school, in Chapeltown, Leeds, never imagined that one of its first big performances would be before the Pope.

The children's singing impressed Catholic education bosses so much they have been selected as one of just two school choirs across the country to perform for the first Papal visit to Britain in almost 30 years.

Headteacher Kathryn Carter said: "When I was told we had been selected to sing for the Pope they had to pick me up off the floor. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our children and something which they will be able to look back on forever."

Fifty children from the school will be singing at a big assembly event at St Mary's University College, Twickenham, on September 17.

The pupils' performance for Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Britain is being prepared by former Holy Rosary and St Anne's pupil Sally Egan who is now the choral director for the Diocese of Leeds and spends two days a week working with the youngsters.
