School helps charity for homeless

AN independent school near Leeds is to support a homeless charity in the city this year.

Gateways School, in Harewood, has chosen St George's Crypt – which is celebrating its 80th anniversary – as one of the good causes it will be fund-raising for. The private school will also be continuing to support the Theo Trust which helps to improve the life of Russian orphans through educational visits. School community outreach co-ordinator Jane Foster said: "The Crypt helps vulnerable families in the Leeds area; it has catering facilities during the day and 14 rooms where people can stay overnight.

"Something the Crypt has specifically asked us to donate are soaps and mini-toothbrushes which they give to people when they arrive for the night. So we will be collecting those for our harvest festival."

The school's two sixth form community outreach prefects, Sam Matterson and Sara Costello, visited the Crypt last week to see it in operation.

Sara said: "All the staff were such lovely people. You can understand how they make the people who come to St George's feel at home. It is a really worthwhile charity to be supporting."

Gateways' headmistress Yvonne Wilkinson said: "It is a privilege for the school to be able to help contribute to the work they do."
