School projects set to move forward

A multi-million pound programme of projects for schools across York is set to be agreed by councillors tomorrow.

Coun Janet Looker, Cabinet member for education at York Council, will decide whether to push-ahead with major schemes within the Education, Children and Young People’s Capital Programme in 2012/13, including modernising and developing Knavesmire Primary School.

The proposed project at the school will seek to provide six extra classrooms, a new hall, a new library area and an improved reception area. The work will be completed over three phases at total cost of around £2.2m and is subject to planning permission.

Other major schemes to be considered include improved accommodation and facilities for students at Applefields Special School and the merger of Our Lady’s VA RC and English Martyrs VA RC Primary.

Coun Looker said: “With rising pupil numbers in our schools and significant reductions in Government funding it’s more important than ever that we ensure major schemes like Knavesmire Primary School are allocated funding.”

The projects will be subject to consultation and will also be recommended to the Cabinet for approval.
