School seeks oldest surviving pupil

A NORTH Yorkshire school which has been educating young people for more than 450 years is attempting to trace its oldest surviving former pupil.

Ripon Grammar School, which in 2005 celebrated its 450th anniversary but can trace back its roots in the area as far back as the seventh century, has launched the hunt for former students and urged them to visit the school to share their memories with staff and pupils.

Headmaster Martin Pearman said: “Ripon Grammar School is one of the oldest schools in the country with a long and proud history.

“It would be good to re-acquaint ourselves as a school with former students and I hope we will find our oldest surviving former student.”

The school hopes to find the former pupil – believed to have attended the school well before the Second World War – in time to invite them as guest of honour to its Grand Summer Draw evening on July 11.

Parents Association chairman Jonathan Tearle said: “I hope all the members of our community are able to help with the search. Anyone with information should contact 07790 796 798.”
