School wrecked by fire a step nearer rising from the ashes

ALMOST a year after it was burned to the ground, a contractor has been chosen to rebuild Campsmount Technology College in Doncaster.

Last year the school had to close early for the Christmas holidays after an electrical fault led to a major fire, and since March this year pupils have been taught in temporary classrooms.

Wates Construction has now been selected as the preferred contractor to carry out the building work and a detailed planning application is due to be submitted to Doncaster Council next month. Subject to planning approval and the signing of contracts with Wates, the 12-month building programme is expected to start in February next year.

Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, said: "To get to this stage so quickly is testament to the work undertaken by the council's school rebuilding team and the school. This is great news for Campsmount."

Andrew Sprakes, headteacher at Campsmount Technology College, said: "We are delighted that all our hard work has paid off and we are now in a superb position to move forward with the new school building that our students, staff and community so richly deserve."

David Price, business unit manager at Wates Construction North East, added: "The determination in the face of adversity shown by Andrew Sprakes and his team inspired us to design a truly inspirational new learning environment to raise the aspirations and achievements of generations of young people. We look forward to working with the council's school rebuilding team and the school to turn these visions into reality."
