Jack Lander, 11, completed the 161-mile trek from Newmarket to Malton today, to be greeted by the retired jockey Jack Berry, at the rehabilitation centre that bears his name.

The £3m centre, which was opened two years ago by Princess Anne, is administered by Racing Welfare, whose Injured Jockeys Fund will receive the proceeds of the sponsored event.

Jack, who took eight days to complete the walk, accompanied by supporters, said: “I would love to be a jump jockey. I love racing and over the last three years I have learnt how important the Injured Jockeys Fund is to all the jockeys and the sport.

“I want to thank to everyone for walking - it has been an great experience for me.”

Mr Berry, who broke 46 bones in his 16-year racing career, joined Jack for the last stretch of the walk, with Racing Welfare’s chief executive Dawn Goodfellow and chairman, Joey Newton.

The youngster previously walked from Stratford to the Oaksey House rehabilitation centre in Berkshire.
