Four schools were closed and around 2,300 homes in Pocklington, East Yorkshire, have been without water since around midday on Monday.

Yorkshire Water is delivering bottled water to the town while engineers try to fix the burst water main.

They expect it to be fixed later this evening.

In a statement, Yorkshire Water said: “We sincerely apologise to the customers in Pocklington and some surrounding areas who have been left without water for many hours. We want to reassure local people that we are doing everything we can to restore supplies as quickly as possible.

“Our operatives are on site now attempting to fix the burst and we will work continuously on site until the pipe is repaired.”

The company said heavy rain and boggy conditions made the search for the burst main “difficult”.

The broken pipe was found at around 1am on Tuesday under a drainage gully in an isolated field.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council said it has closed a number of public buildings, including the four schools and a leisure centre.

A number of bottled water collection points have been set up in the town and nearby villages and supplies are being delivered directly to the homes of vulnerable customers.

A council spokeswoman encouraged residents to check on their neighbours, particularly vulnerable and elderly people, to ensure they have access to the bottled water supplies.

Yorkshire Water advised customers to use bottled water sparingly.
