Scientists gain new insight into insulin
SCIENTISTS in Yorkshire have played a pivotal role in new research into insulin 90 years after it was first discovered.
Researchers at York University’s Department of Chemistry are part of an international team that has established the first three-dimensional insight into the complex way the insulin hormone binds to its receptor on cell surfaces, a development that could lead to more effective hormone therapies.
The hormone is produced in the pancreas and is central to regulating carbohydrate and fat metabolism in the body.
Scientists in Australia, the US and Czech Republic were also involved in the study which is published in the journal Nature.
