Mr Cooper landed the role seven years after joining Hull Arts Centre – which eventually became Hull Truck Theatre.

The opening night is almost sold out, and tickets are already limited for the rest of the week.

Organiser Kevin Holder said: “It has been a very long time since I recall seeing such a large gathering of scooterists in the city centre. Quadrophenia has so much nostalgic value for those who were around at the time, and is inspirational for those who were not. Hopefully, this production will help to stimulate further growth of the already large scooter scene in Hull.”

Quadrophenia is being performed from Wednesday until Saturday by 25 members of Hull Truck Youth Theatre, all aged between 16 and 25.

The production, featuring Pete Townshend’s score, performed by a live band, follows the story of Jimmy, who takes a trip to Brighton that changes his life forever.

Director Mark Rees said: “We are delighted that our production of Quadrophenia has generated such excitement among the local scooterist community. Having such a large gathering outside the theatre on opening night will help give the production a real buzz.”
