Scooters rev-up job seekers

JOB hunters in the East Riding could soon be riding off to work on a new fleet of council-funded scooters as part of programme to help people overcome rural transport problems.

East Riding Council has bought 13 new Yamaha Vity 125cc scooters which are available for hire by anyone with a job offer or who is working or training for at least 16 hours a week.

They bring to 84 the total number of scooters available under the Wheels to Work scheme, which was launched in 2007.

Its aim is to help residents aged 16 or over get to work, training or college, and the new higher specification scooters will allow them to travel longer distances over more challenging rural routes, the council said.

Coun Andy Burton said: “Wheels to Work is an innovative idea that can make a difference for someone when it comes to a job or other related opportunity and I would encourage those in rural areas with transport problems to investigate the scheme.”

The machines can be hired from £45 a month for 50cc versions to £55 for the 125cc. Each applicant will have their individual journey needs assessed.
