Scriptwriters scoop Hollywood award

TWO friends have beaten off stiff international competition to win a major Hollywood award for a science fiction film script.

David Gilbank and Paul Renhard, both from Bradford, won the science fiction screenplay award at the Indie Producer awards held on Sunday night in Hollywood, California.

Mr Gilbank, a public relations manager with Wakefield and District Housing, and Mr Renhard, an advertising creative director with Guardian Media Group, co-wrote the screenplay entitled Cull – which they describe as “pretty dark” – in their spare-time.

Mr Gilbank, 42, said: “We’re obviously very excited about winning the award. One of the judges who voted for us worked on Avatar which puts the award into perspective.”

Mr Renhard, 45, said: “We have production companies who want to ‘option’ the script which means they will represent us and pitch the script around studios in LA over the next 12 months.”
