Scrum on down and donate

LEEDS Rhinos player Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Tina Suryavansi are lending their support to the NHS Blood and Transplant’s campaign to encourage more people to donate organs.

Ms Suryavansi, from Harehills, Leeds, and her son, Akash, 13, who she donated a kidney to in 2004, are shown meeting the rugby star on a visit to Lincoln Wing at St James’s Hospital in Leeds.

Akash’s operation proved to be a major success and he has now fully recovered. However, there is a serious shortage of black and Asian people on the Organ Donor Register in Yorkshire and the Humber region, leading to the campaign.

These communities are more susceptible to illnesses such as diabetes, kidney and heart disease which may result in organ failure and the need for a life-saving transplant.
