Sculptures traces artist’s roots
A FOREST of sculptures carved from trees is stopping students in their tracks at the University of Hull.
Artist Robert Koenig carved some of the male and female figures from lime trees from his mother’s home village in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in south-east Poland. The figures in ‘Odyssey’ represent the artist’s roots and had toured town and cities relevant to the family’s history. The artist’s mother was in a Nazi slave labour camp during World War Two, and settled in the UK after the conflict. Marianne Lewsley-Stier (pictured), of the faculty of events office, said people were intrigued by the stories behind them. The artist will be speaking at the university’s Middleton Hall on October 11, in a free session where people can find out more. The display is part of Polish season at the university next month.
