Sea defence work to start this summer

Work will finally begin this summer on long-awaited improvements to sea defences at Humberston Fitties. The current defences, which protect the Fitties chalet park just inland, have been in place since the 1960s, and in some parts have collapsed.

A grant of 785,000 from the Environment Agency will pay for work on a 300-metre council owned stretch at the north end of the Fitties embankment. New concrete posts and steel reinforcements will be installed.

Steve Redfearn, from North East Lincolnshire Council said: "The current defence system has reached the end of its design life leaving small areas exposed due to tidal action. A full refurbishment will ensure that the area will be secure for at least the next 20 years."

Work to improve the defences will be carried out by during the summer and will be completed by the end of the year. Mr Redfearn added: "We are aware that there are conservation areas in and around where we plan to work. Environmentally, this is a low risk project and all involved will be mindful of their surroundings.
