Seafront flats scheme hits trouble as developer landed with problem

A CONTROVERSIAL council flats scheme on Hornsea seafront has run into trouble.

The plans – which were opposed locally, but backed by East Riding Council planners – should have been heard on Monday but were withdrawn at the 11th hour. It has now emerged that the land on Parva Road was earmarked for recreation under an Act of Parliament in the 1930s.

It means officials will have to seek a redesignation, which will involve further consultation.

Locals are hoping it will lead to a rethink over the plans which appear to have derailed an "exclusive" luxury flats scheme on the site of the former Luigis restaurant.

Potential residents of the flats were among those who objected to the East Riding Council scheme, which would have seen 16 flats built in two blocks on either side.

Work stopped on the site a few months ago.

The former Mayor of Hornsea, Coun John Miller, said: "There are plenty of places more appropriate for affordable housing .

"One of the problems with Hornsea is that we've become so used to East Riding Council not taking any notice of us that many people have stopped objecting."

The developers were not available for comment.
