Sean Bean honoured as legend by home city

Sheffield Lord Mayor Graham Oxley and council leader Paul Scriven look on as actor Sean Bean becomes the latest celebrity to be honoured with a spot on the city's "walk of fame".

The 50-year-old was in the city to unveil his plaque outside the Town Hall, before going to Bramall Lane to watch his beloved Sheffield United play at home.

He said of being selected as a "Sheffield Legend": "It's a real privilege and an honour to be chosen by the people of Sheffield. It's a very special thing for me. Sheffield is a special place for me and always will be."

Bean, shown right chatting with people in the crowd after the plaque unveiling, was born in Handsworth and went to Brook Comprehensive School.

He then joined his father's firm as a welder before starting a drama course, getting a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1981. He graduated in 1983 and has since starred as Richard Sharpe in the television series Sharpe, as well as appearing in films including Goldeneye, Lord of the Rings, National Treasure, Patriot Games and Troy.
