Miss Lawrence, who was was aged 35 when she she went missing near her home in York in 2009, prompted one of the biggest investigations in the history of North Yorkshire Police.

The probe has been scaled back and detectives have repeatedly stated they believe Miss Lawrence has been murdered.

The case has been hampered by her tangled love life, which included relationships with married men who have been unwilling to disclose information to police.

Speaking ahead of the fourth anniversary of her disappearance on Monday, Detective Inspector Adrian Gathercole said the case “continues to capture the interest of the public and media alike”.

He said: “This is in no small part due to the efforts of Claudia’s family and friends who continue to work tirelessly to ensure that Claudia is not forgotten.

“We have not forgotten Claudia.

“We have put a tremendous amount of effort into unravelling the events of 18 and 19 March 2009.

“Despite many days of searching by scores of officers and search and rescue teams, and a large public response to the inquiry, we have yet to find her.”

He said Miss Lawrence’s silver Samsung D900 mobile phone and blue and grey Karrimor Spectre 10 rucksack remain unaccounted for.
