Search for robbers who killed Good Samaritan

TWO muggers who stabbed a have-a-go-hero to death were still on the run last night.

Police had earlier appealed for information about the attack on father-of-one Sukhwinder Singh, who died as he tried to stop the pair in Barking, east London.

Builder Mr Singh, 31, who had a wife and son in India, was described as "brave" and "special".

He ran after the men after a 28-year-old woman's handbag was snatched near Barking station on Friday evening.

Mr Singh had lived in the UK with relatives for about 10 years, according to the police.

His cousin Harwinder Singh, 27, with whom he shared a house, said he drove to the scene where he found Mr Singh dying.

He said: "He was the bravest man, the most selfless person I've ever met."

A committed Sikh, Mr Singh used to pray every evening after work.

Local Councillor Nirmal Singh Gill said he knew Mr Singh by his nickname "Bittu".

"He was a very nice young man," he said.

"He would help anybody so it doesn't surprise me that he was trying to help a lady.

"He didn't deserve this – nobody deserves it – but he was a special young man."

Mr Singh chased the robbers along a nearby road before he was attacked.

He was taken to the Royal London Hospital but later died of a stab wound to the heart.

Detective Inspector John Sandlin said: "This is a tragic death of a man who was killed for attempting to stop others committing crime and our thoughts are with Sukhwinder's family.

"However, I would also to reassure the wider community that tragic events such as these are very rare."

Insp Sandlin said Mr Singh was not connected to the woman who was robbed and described his actions as "brave".

The two robbers have been described as black men in their 20s or 30s.
