Second man sentenced over death of teenager killed by sign in crash

A SECOND man has been sentenced in connection with the death of 18-year-old Burngreave man Abdullah Awil Mohamed.

Abdullah died in March this year after being struck by a road sign that had been hit by a car in Coleridge Road in Darnall.

Yesterday, Nizamul Hoque, 19, of Willow Drive, Handsworth, a rear-seat passenger, received a 22-month sentence, to be served in a young offender institution, having previously pleaded guilty to violent disorder.

Mohammed Kahar, 19, of Swarcliffe Road, Darnall, was found not guilty of manslaughter on Friday, 28 October, at the conclusion of a four-week trial.

The charge against a fourth male, who was also in the car at the time of the incident, was dropped at the start of the trial.

Detective Superintendent James Abdy, the senior investigating officer in the case, said: “South Yorkshire Police offer our deepest condolences to Abdullah’s family, and the people affected by the events at Coleridge Road in Darnall on the 17th March this year.

“This has been a complex and challenging investigation, the outcome of which has shown Aminur Rahman is criminally responsible for causing Abdullah’s death, hence his guilty plea to manslaughter by an unlawful act at the beginning of the trial.”

Chief Superintendent Simon Torr, District Commander for Sheffield, said: “Now that criminal proceedings have concluded, we would like to appeal for the continued support of communities, remaining calm and working with us to build further trust and confidence. It is testament to this relationship that local people supported the police throughout the difficult investigation.

“I will do all I can to ensure that the city’s officers and staff continue to listen and respond to the needs of our communities and police in a fair and transparent manner.”
