Second nightclub may face licence suspension

A SECOND nightclub in North East Lincolnshire could have its licence suspended as a result of police concerns about the way it is being run.

Last week, Flares nightclub in Alexandra Road, Cleethorpes, was forced to close following an attack at 2am on Sunday, March 7, that left a man with serious head and face injuries.

The 26-year-old was hurt during an "altercation" near the smoking area at the rear of the premises.

He was taken to Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby before being transferred to Hull Royal Infirmary, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

The club's licence was suspended by North East Lincolnshire Council after police raised "serious concerns" about the management of the venue. A review of the licence will be held on April 1.

Speaking after the licence was suspended, Coun John Colebrook, chairman of the council's licensing sub-committee, said: "Members have heard that the police are not satisfied that the premises can be adequately managed in such a way as to prevent serious crime and serious disorder. We therefore feel it is necessary to suspend the licence with immediate effect."

Police have arrested seven men in connection with the incident and inquiries are continuing.

It has also emerged that the council's licensing committee will meet on April 7 to review the licence of The Venue nightclub, in Pasture Street, Grimsby.

This follows police concerns about "crime and disorder" connected with the venue.

Humberside Police spokesman James Cartwright said: "Police in North East Lincolnshire work closely with our local authority partners, local licensees and door security operators in order to ensure that our local venues are able to provide a safe night out to everyone in the area.

"We are currently undertaking license reviews for The Venue in Grimsby and also Flares in Cleethorpes following concerns in recent months.

"We are working closely with the management at these venues in order to address these concerns. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time."

The licensee of The Venue, Paul Weeks, declined to comment.
