Second tragedy as widow of murdered shopkeeper dies

THE widow of murdered West Yorkshire shopkeeper Gurmail Singh has died, less than a week after his killers were locked up.

Mohinder Kaur, 66, died yesterday at the home she shared with her husband in Huddersfield, following a battle with cancer.

Mr Singh was attacked for just a few pounds and some sweets, alcohol and cigarettes at his shop in February.

When the 63-year-old fought back, his attackers grabbed bottles of wine off the shelves and repeatedly smashed them over his head.

Last week at Bradford Crown Court, two men were jailed for life for his murder. Muawaz Khalid, 20, who had a previous conviction for affray, was told he must spend at least 21 years in prison.

Nabeel Shafi, 18, who angrily shouted his innocence as he was led from the dock, was given a 20-year minimum term. Three other men were also sentenced for their parts in the bungled robbery.

Today, tributes to Mr Singh's widow were led by Inderpal Randhawa, general secretary of the Sikh temple in Huddersfield where the shopkeeper was a member.

He said: "Our thoughts and sympathies, and those I am sure of the whole town, go out to Mrs Singh's family and friends. It is such terrible shocking news for a family who have already gone through such a bad time."

Mrs Singh had suffered three years ago from a form of pancreatic cancer.
