The museum contains a street of shopfronts salvaged from historic premises in Hull and Leeds dating back to the 1930s and people can browse the old-fashioned Co-op and Chemist's, once owned by the oldest practising chemist in the country, Walter Castelow.

For the first time, they will be able to buy sweets from the Sweet Shop. Once part of G.Stevens & Sons, it used to be on the pier and was where ferry passengers used to be able to pick up an ice.

Education project officer Jane Avison said: "We are proud to present this wonderful event, back by popular demand.

"The day will be packed full of fun hands on experiences for the whole family, offering a truly unique opportunity to find out what life was like in the past."

Saturday's event runs from 11am to 3pm.
