Self-taught photographer in a hurry captures all walks of life

SELF-TAUGHT photographer David Arnison’s latest exhibition features images of people from different social backgrounds over the last three decades.

From All Walks focuses on the character and personality of a diverse selection of people dating from the mid-80s to the present day and will be on display at The Stephen Joseph Theatre, in Scarborough.

David Arnison was artist-in-residence at Burton Agnes Hall, Driffield, in 2010 and 2011, and in the last few years he has exhibited at Dewsbury Museum and Huddersfield Art Gallery. He is a self-taught photographer, and prints and frames all his own pictures.

He said: “I started to take photography seriously in 1985 when I set up my own darkroom at home. Life and having children then curtailed my pursuits somewhat, but in recent years, I have returned with a vengeance, in an effort to make up for lost time.

“I prefer black and white images and have always been strongly influenced by Bill Brandt’s high contrast urban landscapes. For social documentary I favour Don McCullin’s approach, and for portraiture, Jean Loup Sieff is an inspiration.”

From All Walks can be seen in The Gallery at the Stephen Joseph Theatre from Thursday May 23 until Saturday June 29. The Gallery is open from noon until 6pm, except when there is a matinee performance in The Round.
