Serial sex offender in rape bidat rail station jailed indefinitely

Olwen Dudgeon

A WOMAN was left bruised and traumatised after she was attacked on a station by a violent and drunken sex offender who tried to rape her.

A judge yesterday imposed an indeterminate jail sentence for public protection on Ian Naylor after describing him as a dangerous individual. He said the victim herself had rightly described the offences as “callous brutal and disgusting.”

Leeds Crown Court heard Naylor first approached his victim as she was waiting for friends at Mirfield railway station, near Dewsbury, asking if she knew when the next train was due to Huddersfield.

He then went away but returned as she was putting earphones in to listen to her MP3 player, putting both hands on her shoulders and forcing her back into some fencing.

Timothy Capstick, prosecuting, said Naylor told her if she screamed she would be killed.

She was terrified as he took her by her arm and led her along the platform and down steps to the car park still pulling her wheeled suitcase with her.

He told her to hurry up and again warned her not to scream.

She fell over at one point in the car park but he just pulled her to her feet and when they reached the far end of the car park he told her to go into the bushes.

When her mobile phone rang he demanded she hand it over but she managed to accept the call as she did so and her friend at the other end could hear her crying and screaming before it was thrown away.

Naylor then sexually and physically assaulted her slapping her, ripping her clothes and calling her names telling her: “Women should not wear trousers they should wear skirts.”

She did as she was told by him and he tried to have sex with her but was not successful.

He then put both hands round her neck squeezing until she momentarily blacked out.

When she regained consciousness he was still beside her but eventually walked off.

His terrified victim managed to return to the car park where she found her friends. She was covered in dirt and mud, shaking and crying hysterically with blood around her mouth and nose and bruises round her neck.

They locked themselves in a car and called the police.

Naylor, 26 of Grimethorpe Street, South Elmsall, admitted two charges of attempted rape and one of assault causing actual bodily harm to the woman on May 22 last year.

The court heard he had a record of previous sexual offences beginning when he was 14 when he grabbed a femalemember of staff at his school indecently assaulting her and calling her “a slag.” At 15 he approached a girl of a similar age and threatened to pull down her pants. He took hold of her and there was a struggle but she got away .

Finally in August 2000 he was given an 18 months detention and training order after he attacked a woman psychologist interviewing him in a secure unit to prepare a report on him. He put his hands over her mouth and nose and indecently assaulted her.

Imposing the indeterminate sentence for public protection, Judge Rodney Grant ordered Naylor to serve a minimum of four and a half years in prison minus the time spent in custody. But he warned him he would not be released until considered no longer a risk to the community.

Neil Clark for Naylor said he had a difficult childhood, spending much of it in care and by last year was an alcoholic who regularly drank around nine litres of cider a day. Prior to the offences that day he had been drinking for a long period and had little recollection of events because he had consumed 18 litres of cider and six of lager which clearly disinhibited him.

He now realised he needed help for his drinking and his attitude to women.
