Seven hurt in crash involving police car

SEVEN people, including two baby boys, were injured in a crash between a police car and another vehicle in Huddersfield.

West Yorkshire Police said a police Volvo estate responding to an emergency call collided with a BMW which then crashed into an unoccupied parked VW Polo.

The five occupants of the BMW, who are from Huddersfield, were taken to hospital.

The most seriously injured were a nine-month-old baby boy and a woman in her 30s. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, police said.

The male driver, also in his 30s, was also treated in hospital, along with a baby boy, also aged nine months, and a seven-year-old boy.

The collision happened at the junction of Birkby Hall Road and Grimscar Avenue, Birkby, Huddersfield, at 8.15 on Friday night.

Two police officers were also treated in hospital for minor injuries.

The force’s Professional Standards Department has been made aware and the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

An incident involving a police car led to the death of a pedestrian in South Shields.

The 52-year-old man, who has not been named, was taken to South Tyneside Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Two officers, including the driver, were also taken to hospital. Their injuries are not thought to be serious.

Northumbria Police said the crash happened on Saturday night. The police car was responding to an emergency call.
